My old pal James Leary, who played Clem the kitten-eating demon on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has had more air time in these last few weeks, on his new Domino's Pizza commercial, than I think he's ever had. It's a clever commercial, and he's good in it. But Domino's has been deluging the airwaves with it, and I couldn't figure out why.
Now I think I know. According to Time Magazine, on Super Bowl Sunday, pizza chains can do as much as 40% more delivery business than on a regular Sunday. Domino's wants us to think of them when we reach for the phone during the game, so they're swamping us with ads.
Domino's is pretty mediocre pizza, but I might still take them up on it if they'd deliver out here. We don't have one in town, though, and even the pizza shops in town won't deliver out this far. Sorrentino's in San Diego refuses to drive the 10 hours or so, too. We'll probably have pizza on game day (not that we're big football fans, but there are always entertaining ads to be seen if nothing else), but we'll be cooking it here.
Unle Paul, everybody.

I saw that commercial a couple times and kept thinking, "Where have I SEEN that guy?" Then it hit me. I'm just not used to seeing James on a screen without a heaping helping of fleshy-looking latex.

For a lot of people it's probably the voice they recognize first, only it belongs to the wrong face.

OMG, so it *was* him I saw!
I don't normally watch TV "live" - as in, while shows are actually airing, so I miss most commercials.
The other night, I did watch the Smallville 100th ep at it's normal scheduled time - and was just on the way in/out from the loo when I caught about .5 second of the ad out of the corner of my eye.
I thought it was him, but couldn't be positive.
Sweet!
Oddly enough, in the realm of weird coincidences, I just got a 4x7 copy of the lovely photo I had taken with James in 2004. I wanted a copy to put up in my office, but have little room, thus the smaller version. It arrived the same day I saw the ad.

That is a freaky coincidence. Maybe he's stalking you...
